BANKSIA
$350

This bowl was hand built using a pinch and coil method. This is my favourite means of creating ceramic forms. It is a soothing, rhythmic, ancient way of creating ceramic forms. The bowl is supported by three hollow feet, creating a stable foundation and reflecting time-honoured ceramic traditions.

The bowl is decorated using the sgraffito technique in which the bowl is coated with coloured clay and the design is carved into this surface. In this case, the design illustrates Banksia pods and leaves inspired by the trees surrounding a recent Territory camping excursion.

The Banksia pod and leaves are separately modelled forms to accompany the bowl.
The interior of the bowl as well as the pod and leaves are finished with a food-safe white ceramic glaze.

Artist Statement: I am a ceramic artist who has lived in Darwin for nearly 40 years.

I work from a small studio at home surrounded by my tropical Darwin garden.

I have always loved making things and clay has been my standout favourite medium. I have worked and played with ceramics most of my life. I love its sensuousness, its messiness and its endless versatility. I have learned my craft from many sources over a lifetime from university study, workshops, masterclasses, short courses, books, exhibitions and my own practice.

My ceramic practice centres around creation of hand built objects including functional ware, sculptural pieces and jewellery. My work is often inspired by our wonderful Territory environment and our unique lifestyle.
