WHY SHE MELTS
$250

“Why she melts” is a personal and deep piece to the creator. The depth of the image resides in much of the materials and symbolic concepts itself. In the piece, a seemingly wax figure melts. As she stands in a harsh lighting, it causes her body and skin to melt, however instead of moving into the plainer and simpler foreground, she stands in utter surrender. Following the rest of the paintings in the series “Why Won’t You Help yourself?” The art piece stands proudly as the first and currently favoured painting in the body of work. The concept explores symbolic self-destruction, as portrayed with the melting character stuck in a state of dejection.

The mediums of the painting consists of oil paints on canvas, aswell as beeswax that brings the painting to life; via creating 3D drops of wax out of the canvas. As if she is melting in real time, adding a better sense of surrealism in the realistic piece.

Artist Statement: Young Taya-Mai Ducay is only 17 yet has been praised for her creative and expressive pieces. From when she was a child, she portrayed a passion for art in many forms as she consistently painted or drew with whatever she had available. As she finishes school and begins uni, art had become a hobby that she often finds resolution and her best outlets of expression in with a paintbrush. Her greatest sources of admiration is within the great Classical and Renaissance oil paintings of a range of artists, especially of Greek Mythological and Biblical subjects. The inspiration in these works have been the intelligent use of painting techniques and how artists used to portray subjects in a very physically and emotionally vulnerable persona. Whilst the preferred medium across her artworks is now oil paints, Taya has explored a range of mediums. From acrylic to watercolour, pen to clay, she has been completely self-taught herself and determined to find a way to materialise whatever perfected form she has thought up to portray.
