THE OBJECTS OF MEMORY/ALL THAT REMAINS
$9,999

I remember the day after my husband Terry died. The sun rose the same as it did the day before, the birds were singing, the world was still turning.

Terry’s work bag was in the same spot, untouched. His dirty work clothes were where he had dropped them the day before. Everything was the same except that it wasn’t. In the months that followed his death, once the initial onslaught of organsation and paperwork subsided I was confronted with the decision of what to do with all of his things. The everyday buts and pieces, accumulated over a lifetime but of little value to anyone else.

I remember that day I picked up Terry’s ashes. He died and then three weeks later I was picking his ashes up. I was still reeling from his unexpected death and yet there I was picking up an urn and a box. The absurdity of the exchange bordered on the ridiculous. A life in return for a pile of ashes.
