THE THREE POINT ASHER CHAIR
$3,450

Almost 2 years after creating her first piece, The Sol Table, Nomthi Mkhwebu the visionary behind Sol and Planka is back again to introduce her latest piece. The Three-point Asher Chair.

The Asher, much like The Sol Table is inspired by Nomthi‘s environment. “My love for Darwin and the tropics has always led me to create unique pieces that play on my environment and adapt to it. The Asher Chair combines black and red stains to give it a solid, rigid and imposing look during the gloomy days of the wet season while also giving it a golden glow that highlights the beautiful wooden undertones of the mohogany and strip away all seriousness from the piece during the dry. In the sun, the Asher forms and almost liquid design, giving you get the illusion of only three pieces, but upon further inspection of the piece, a fourth piece emerges, which when in use, give the chair, more depth, allowing the owner more room to spread the body. Specifically designed to be able to share the space with a loved one comfortably sitting on your lap on a much-needed study break (because of course she fell in love she’s an artist)

Finally, the marriage of mahogany and steel provide an intricate, sophisticated, yet solid design, sturdy enough to weather the tough conditions of the territory. Creating a piece so strong that even when dismantled will be there long after the artist. The making of a true functional piece of Art.

Artist Statement: Nomthi Mkhwebu is a self-taught design and woodwork artist. She draws her inspiration from the relaxed atmosphere of the Territory in order to create clean minimalistic pieces that give importance to everyday moments. Using hand selected quality materials and in collaboration with local fabricators she is able to present intricate pieces that are strong, interesting and long withstanding.
Arriving in Darwin at the age of 9, she has seen the drastic change in its development. However, one thing she feels hasn’t changed much since her arrival is the wide gap in the functional art space. Something she’s become determined to do something about. Her aim is to create beautiful long-lasting unique pieces that are able to withstand the harsh environments on the territory.
The same harsh territory environment which has forced her to gravitate more towards strength.
Through her work and through her previous projects, she aims to coalesce the two and create timeless pieces that make a statement.
Receiving one of the first two Next Generation Art grants in 2022, Nomthi, is up and coming. But never in a rush. “Great things take time, consideration, attention to detail and sometimes if not most times; obsession” Her goal since the very start has been to create unique conversational pieces. “the motto has been and will always be; one of one”.
