LOTUS SERIES III – UNFURLING II
$300

The lotus effect is a recurring theme in my art practice. This series continues the exploration of the lotus and its significance from a cultural and scientific perspective. For many cultures the lotus is a symbol of purity since it emerges perfectly clean from the murky waters. From a scientific perspective, the self-cleaning property of the lotus, known as the “lotus effect”, is due to the microscopic leaf structure on the lotus leaf surface.
This image shows a lotus leaf in the last stage of unfurling, invoking a feeling of serenity and hope.

Artist Statement: I am a German-Australian printmaking & textile artist and educator living and working in a small coastal community on Larrakia country in the Top End of the Northern Territory. My work centres on the exploration of themes related to nature, culture and language. At my home printmaking studio I work on collaborative arts projects and facilitate workshops in various printmaking techniques.

I completed a Bachelor of Creative Arts and Industries (Fine Arts) at Charles Darwin University and worked as editioning printer in commercial printmaking studios – Northern Editions and Basil Hall Editions – for over 10 years. I have experience in teaching printmaking and applied linguistics & literacy in secondary and adult educational settings, as well as facilitating arts workshop.

I have been involved in numerous group exhibitions locally, nationally and internationally. At the international biannual printmaking conference IMPACT, I have given co-presentations and co-published articles on topics related to printmaking. A short stay residency in Iceland in August 2022 provided great inspiration for my ongoing work.
