WANUWUY
$530

After a two day journey along outback Northern Territory roads, welcomed by Buffalo, Road Trains and dust clouds, a short stint through 4wd sand dunes that appear to have no direct destination, we reach the peak of the last dune that shows us we have arrived. Clear blue tonal skies, white sands and a magical Turquoise Ocean tell us that we won’t ever get to experience this sight for the first time again.

Inspired by a recent trip to Wanuwuy (Cape Arnhem), the intention of this artwork was to try and capture the magnificence and brilliance of Wanuwuy. I didn’t want to distort its interpretation and wanted to capture the moment of being in its presence by using similar colours, tones and textures. Smooth acrylics highlighted with acrylic pen simulate the cathedral like geological formations lining the coastline, unique to this location.

Artist Statement: Michelle Newton – Originally from Country Victoria, I have now been happily living in the Northern Territory since 2011. I come from a family of artists but only in recent years have found my creative happiness through picking up a paintbrush again. More a contemporary artist than traditional, I enjoy experimenting in many art and craft forms and styles. My most recent pieces have been created with acrylic paints on canvas to produce vibrant works, using bold colours and compositions of visited locations across the Territory. I have a deep seeded appreciation and respect for our natural and diverse landscapes and get much enjoyment and satisfaction when I complete a piece that expresses this.
