IMPROVISATIONS IN YELLOW AND BLUE

Improvisation in visual arts is to me very similar to improvisation in music; the tonal qualities of different colours, the hardness or softness of a mark, a smooth or rough surface, are all part of the process. In music, the tonal characteristics of different sounds and instruments, the frequencies, melodies, dynamics, and beautiful inspirational noise!
The two panels of this diptych were created in parallel, with the different materials, marks, and colours informing what would come next; like improvisation in music, where the inspiration is the music itself, as it unfolds.
One panel predominantly warm, yellow, and the other cooler, in blue; with contrast and unity they inform and support each other.

Artist Statement: Mats Undén is a Master Printer, visual artist, sound artist, musician, tutor, father and grandfather, originally from Sweden, well established within the arts and music scene in Darwin since 2008. Music and visual arts has always complemented each other in Mats’ broad and diverse career as a Master Printer, Arts Lecturer, Artist, Composer, and Musician.
