Mary Alice Barton

A RIPPLE EFFECT
$4,000

Ripple effect is an emotional and physical response to the tones and rhythms in daily life here. Many musicians have inspired me to paint rhythm and tone. I feel there are key links between music, colour, feeling and painting. Colour theory has been the basis and fundamental element of my painting explorations. I’m interested in portraying the feelings that colour can elicit, rather than representing something realistically. Colour can hurt me, and also evoke joy; I experience real feelings when I see colour.

My physical location also influences my work. My latest work reflects my move to Alice Springs. Living in Mparntwe has opened my eyes and ears to a sea of new colours and many different cultures. I love living in this little town, where the sky is blue. I painted this work on the veranda of my studio in the CBD. I can see the mountain from here, it follows me around when I paint.
