KAPOCK IN FLOWER
$400
The kapok bush produces striking yellow flowers after shedding its leaves during the dry season.
These vibrant blooms later transform into green, capsule-like pods. As these pods mature, they harden, darken to a rich brown, and naturally split open to disperse seeds surrounded by a soft, cotton-like material known as kapok.
Indigenous people from northern Australia have long cherished this versatile small tree. They enjoy the flowers raw or cooked, along with the roots of young plants. The fluffy kapok is used in ceremonial body adornments, while the tree’s bark is crafted into strings and paintbrushes.
The Kapok bush, one of the rare deciduous trees in the Northern Territory, has always captivated me with its stunning and distinctive flowers and seeds. Inspired by its unusual beauty, I crafted this piece using a combination of paper and cotton balls. I used an image from Ian Morris for inspiration.

Artist Statement: From the moment we awaken until we unwind with a book at night, paper remains a constant companion. My affinity for paper spans over four decades, during which I’ve specialized in crafting recycled handmade paper. This passion began during a workshop with Winsome Jobling in Darwin during the 1980s, igniting a lifelong fascination. Over the years, I’ve explored diverse avenues, creating paper bowls, lampshades, greeting cards, and sculptures from recycled paper, craft papers, as well as those derived from plants, denim, and cotton.
Like many artists, my creativity is drawn from nature. I avidly collect leaves, shells, beach glass, and various found objects to incorporate into my artwork.
I am proud to be a member of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA), the foremost global organization for paper artists. In 2023, I had the privilege of attending my inaugural IAPMA conference in Germany. This enriching experience allowed me to connect and learn from fellow paper artists hailing from across the globe.
Looking forward, I eagerly anticipate participating in the next conference slated for 2025, eager to delve deeper into the realm of paper artistry.
