Sun Dancer is inspired by orchids growing in my own tropical Top End garden. The strongly contrasting interplay of brilliant pinks and vivid whites of the orchid flowers dancing against moody dark green shadows speaks to me of a cool lush garden refuge – the sort of place we would all love to spend time in. Transposing the dramatic dancing light into a botanical artwork enables the refuge of the garden to be brought in to the refuge of the home.

Artist Statement: I love plants, I love animals, I love colour! Hence my artisitic inspiration mostly comes from the natural world in one form or another. Being a longterm Territory resident the tropical environment of the Top End has a huge influence on much of my work. Botanical subjects are amongst my favourites to portray – their variety of shapes, colours and forms is infinite yet too often goes unseen or unnoticed. My current favourite medium is watercolour. I do also work in other media (eg: digital, textiles, coloured pencil) but to me, the transparency, clarity and luminosity of watercolour is hard to beat!
