Johanna (Giddy) Goldsmith

THE COWBOY AND THE MOON
$1,295

‘The Cowboy and the Moon’ pays homage to being at one with the land and finding our way home to ourselves. It’s about the many people we meet along the way, the interesting creatures great and small that flow alongside us, the big dreams we quietly share with ourselves and the moon, and the greatest risks in life often being the best ones. It’s a reminder that no road is long with good company, that it’s okay to ride solo deep in thought, and that eventually, you’ll find your way. When you stop and look around, you’ll see that this life is pretty beautiful, friend.

This was a fun project that took me on a real journey. To fully experience it, viewing it up close is essential. There are layers upon layers of colours, textures, patterns, and some of my original Giddy illustrations. Look closely for the hidden textures beneath the paint and the 3D elements; they’re extra special.

Mixed media: acrylic paint, acrylic paint pens, beads, and jewels on canvas

Artist Statement: Johanna Goldsmith, better known as Giddy, is a Darwin-based artist whose work is a vibrant and powerful celebration of individuality, mental health, and community. Born in Darwin, NT, and raised in Cebu, Philippines, Giddy brings a rich cultural background to her art, blending diverse influences into a style that is uniquely her own. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts and studying visual communication, Giddy spent a decade as a senior brand designer, specialising in graphic and web design. This experience honed her eye for detail and deepened her understanding of visual storytelling.

However, it was a growing passion for mental health advocacy with her own lived experience that ultimately shifted Giddy’s creative journey. She left the corporate design world to focus on raising awareness and funds for mental health through her art. Giddy’s work is characterised by a quirky, fun, and illustrative style, bursting with colour and imagination. Each piece invites viewers to embrace their uniqueness and reflects her commitment to bringing joy and positivity to the often challenging conversation around mental health.

Giddy lived and worked in Brisbane and Sydney, where she further developed her creative voice before returning to her hometown of Darwin. Now, she continues to create from the heart of the Northern Territory, infusing her art with the vibrant energy of the land and the community that surrounds her.

Through her art, Giddy aims to inspire others to engage with mental health in a positive and supportive way, using creativity as a tool for healing and connection. Her current projects include a series of works dedicated to the theme of mental wellness, with a portion of proceeds supporting mental health charities.
