Joanna del Nido

CONTAIN YOURSELF (LARGE)
$1,600

This work was created for an exhibition titled ‘A literal translation’, in which the artist explored some of the peculiarities of our English language, known as idioms.

Creative by nature, we have invented often-bizarre sayings to provide comfort or to make sense of situations or complicated emotions. Their obscure meanings, seemingly understood by the masses, are often lost on children and those learning English. Del Nido explored these often-nonsensical plays on words to create a series of thought provoking and light-hearted works. This piece “Contain Yourself” hints at a literal solution of neatly folding up to mimic a conventional and recognisable box, and by doing so successfully containing oneself.
