ANACAONA
$720

“Anacaona,” a name that translates to “golden flower” in Aztec, embodies the delicate interplay of artistry and cultural homage in this sculptured terracotta piece. Once sculptured and bisque fired, instead of glazing, I decided to use vibrant acrylic paints to bring “Anacaona” alive and evoke the vibrant spirit of her namesake. “Anacaona” celebrates the ancient beauty of Aztec heritage.

Sculptured terracotta clay and acrylic paint
45 x 31 x 31cm

Artist Statement: I have lived in the Territory for most of my life and I worked as a teacher in schools and the University. As a local hobby ceramicist, my artistic practice, through exploration with different clays, allows me to craft unique and quirky forms that are brought to life with bold, vibrant colors. What began as a playful pastime while I was working and raising a family, has evolved into a profound passion since my retirement, becoming a vital part of my daily life. Working with clay has not only offered me a creative outlet but has also been a source of solace and rejuvenation. Each piece I create reflects my love for experimentation and my desire to infuse my sculptures with a touch of whimsy and personal expression.
