Victoria River Reflections captures a moment in time. The river bank changes with every Wet as the current carries away the soil, rips up roots and drags even the mightiest trees into the water. Much of my childhood was spent on the Victoria River and I have seen it evolve subtly over time. Following the colossal wet season that fell on this region in February / March 2023, many parts of it were unrecognisable. This painting captures a moment as it stood in the past.

Artist Statement: Hayley is an emerging artist originally from Katherine, NT. She began developing her art practice once living away from the Territory and attending university. Painting places that held strong memories was a way to feel immersed and visit them from inside her urban apartment. Hayley’s interest in the outdoors lead to her studying Ecology at university. This contributed to her other artistic niche: creating works of under appreciated and misunderstood members of the animal kingdom, namely snakes, beetles, lizards and spiders. Hayley has had no formal art training outside of school, therefore her work and style has developed slowly by way of experimentation and learning by mistake. She works with a variety of mediums including graphite and coloured pencils, ink pens, oil and acrylic.
