CROC CROSSING
$1454.75

Freshwater crocodiles are renowned for their high arch-backed walk and as a Territory nature photographer I had wanted to capture this look at croc eye level for a long time – easier said than done! I strove to be the epitomy of patience over the 2024 wet season as time and again I missed opportunities due to out of focus avian distractions, rain, poor light, and other factors that conspired against me. Finally one fine morning all the elements combined as this healthy croc stepped up in gorgeous morning light to make a perfect portrait and a memory that will stay with me for life.

Artist Statement: Etienne has been photographing wildlife in the Northern Territory for nearly 10 years, where he splits his time between conservation land management, running Wild Territory Images, and ecological work. In the earlier years Etienne spent much time pursuing oddities, but more recently has found himself increasingly drawn to creating intimate portraits of the big stuff, the wildlife that people travel from all over the world to see. Etienne’s work is often on display around the Darwin arts and crafts scene, and he is represented online and internationally by the Nature Picture Library.
