THE MAGPIE GAZE
$1,350
The artwork depicts two Australian Magpies in Eucalyptus foliage. The artist has a background in environmental biology, and his artwork is often inspired by the natural world, and bird life is a subject matter often explored. The use of the controlled pen & ink work allows for the development of extremely detailed works, and the feathers of birds lend themselves wonderfully to this type of work. Again, as an environmentalist, David is very motivated in re-using materials to create his art, and lessen the impact his artwork has on our planet. The twin doors from an old dresser were found at Shoal Bay recycling centre, a resource David uses frequently, and the centre has a piece of David’s up-cycled sculptural work installed at the weighing station, entitled ‘Dragonfly’. The doors were painted, and distressed by the artist, before revering their orientation to showcase the birds as if in a double window.
