“LOST” #2 of the series ‘The Full Bottle’
$550

The clean geometric lines of these thrown red stoneware bottles called out for simple decoration. And when huddled together with their glazed triangles, feel like a forest of pine trees. Hence the title “LOST” – # 2 of the series ‘The Full Bottle’.

Stoneware clay

Artist Statement: I have always loved ceramics, but started to dabble in clay relatively recently after retiring from full time employment. I work in porcelain and stoneware either hand building, casting, or mostly throwing. The wonderful thing about ceramics is that it all comes from the earth and we’re just reshaping it and applying some science and heat to form an inexhaustable variation of shapes, sizes, textures, colours.

Truly there is no end to learning and trying new things, and digging into a bucket of sloppy clay is tantamount to the joy of making mud pies. So it’s a joyous experience but oft dappled with immense frustration and despair, when things don’t emerge from the kiln as planned!

My aesthetic is minimalist with a focus on form. I prefer to leave a substantial area my work unglazed to celebrate the beauty, the feel and texture of the ‘earth’. My work is functional, but sometimes veers more towards form and design. I am influenced by the simplicity of much of Japanese ware and to some extent Chinese ceramics, with a touch of the geometrics and colours of Scandinavian or as some have said a “retro 60’s” feel. Either way, I keep it simple.
